VIM & VIGR, creator of compression socks, announces the winners of its annual nursing scholarship, Natalya Alcaraz and Anthony Castellanos. The recipients are first-generation college students who exhibit resiliency, determination and hope in their personal and academic lives. Each will put the $3,400 award towards his and her educational pursuits.
Alcaraz attends Oregon Health & Science University and chose a career in health care due to the national shortage of health care workers and a desire to help under-served communities.
“Communities below the poverty line or with large tribal populations are shifted to the sidelines during health care shortages,” Alcaraz said. “As a nurse, it is my duty to help those in need and to be a source of strength for my patients, and I look forward to providing quality care in these difficult times.”
Castellanos attends the School of Nursing and Health Professions at the University of San Francisco. A first-generation Chicano student raised by Spanish speakers, Castellanos witnessed barriers to adequate health care at a young age.
“Translating and advocating in appointments was a driving factor in pursuing a career in health care,” Castellanos said. “During my educational journey, I have challenged myself by taking rigorous course loads and working two full-time jobs. Life experiences and having a strong passion for advocating for others are some of the many vital qualities that build therapeutic communication with patients.”
VIM & VIGR founder Michelle Huie added, “The past couple of years have been difficult for everyone, and nurses have bravely worked through the pandemic to ensure our health and safety. This year’s scholarship recipients have overcome adversity and are undaunted by the challenges of our health care system. We are proud to do our part to help Natalya and Anthony continue their academic pursuits.”
