The run-up week to Father’s Day weekend will feature cooler temperatures to both recent trends, with mostly normal conditions across much of western North America, according to forecast from Planalytics. Eastern locations will begin the week cool, but temperatures will moderate to warmer than normal across the Ohio Valley, Northeast, and eastern Canada just in time for Dad’s big weekend. “The warmest anomalies will be focused throughout interior regions, enticing shoppers to surprise Dad with grilling and outdoor entertainment gifts,” say Planalytics forecasters.
Moving into the weekend, dads across much of the U.S. will be treated to seasonal to slightly warmer than normal conditions; Ohio Valley and Southeast to trend cooler. Northern areas of the U.S. can expect daily maximum temperatures in the 80s, while southern locations will trend from the high 80s to the mid-90s. The Pacific Northwest will experience the coolest readings, trending in the low-to-mid 70s. While good news for anyone with outdoor plans, those in the Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, and Northwest will want to keep an umbrella handy as showers and thunderstorms are possible throughout the weekend. Central and eastern Canada will also enjoy warmer temperature comparisons, while western provinces trend cooler and wetter vs. normal throughout the weekend.
Based on a recent survey published by the National Retail Federation (NRF), consumers are expected to spend $126 each on Dad this year, representing a total spend of $14.3B, an 8% increase from last year. Special outings and experiences lead as top gifts for Dad, followed by clothing, electronics, and gift cards.
For reference, Father’s Day last year in the U.S. (June 21, 2015) was the warmest in over 55 years and wettest since 2011. Canada experienced warmer than normal temperatures and its most rainfall since 2007.
