The Stable in Saginaw set to Reopen

Longtime Saginaw Mich., retailer, The Stable Outdoor Outfitters, closed its doors earlier this year, after nearly half a century in business, when owner Denny Whalen announced his retirement. Now, Flint-based Shumaker’s Ski & Snowboard wants to bring it back.

The snow sports outfitter, located at 2342 S. Ballenger Highway in Flint, announced its plans in a Facebook post on Thursday, Oct. 17. The post offered few details, only that the company plans to reopen the shop. In the comment thread, the company added, “We are really glad to be part of the community,” and “we will work very hard to preserve the tradition and legacy.”

Vice President Tony Shumaker said the store will have a soft opening beginning next week and a grand opening the second weekend of November. He said the company had been looking to expand into the Saginaw market when Whalen reached out to them to discuss a possible deal.

“We were able to rehire most of his staff that he had, so we have some good people coming back,” including Whalen and his wife Susie Whalen, who will be involved in the business, Shumaker said.
