NOC to Build Outdoor Entertainment Complex

Nantahala Outdoor Center is prepared to develop what’s being described as a “world-class outdoor entertainment complex” along the Tuckaseigee River in Dillsboro, North Carolina, according to reports in local media. The plan is forecast to bring more than 24,000 new visitors a year to Jackson County.

On March 3, local commissioners and the NOC plan to finalize allowing the company to use 17.65 acres of county-owned land. NOC will offer kayak instruction, guided tours on the Tuckaseigee River, zip lines and canopy tours; a paddle-sports rental center and retail sales of outdoor gear and apparel; primitive lodging such as yurts, platform tents, group bunkhouses and small cabins. Additionally, the outdoor company plans to schedule events in Dillsboro ranging from national-level races to community festivals, according to a project report prepared by the Jackson County Office of Economic Development.

The company could start developing the property this year, but the adventure park won’t be fully operational until next year, according to county officials. Public documents indicate the development phase could continue for up to three years. NOC, headquartered in Swain County’s Nantahala Gorge, in 2011 built an adventure park at its Nantahala Gorge headquarters with zip lines, canopy tours and challenge courses.

“We are anticipating millions of dollars of incremental revenue to be spent throughout Jackson County once this project reaches completion,” said Rich Price, director of Jackson County’s economic development office. “The impact on lodging, food and beverage, retail and transportation spending will be tremendous, and we are confident that the NOC brand will attract additional new businesses.”

The Tuckaseigee River bisects the taxpayer-owned property, providing NOC land on both sides of the river.
