Chemours Adds to Non-fluorinated DWRs

The Chemours Company announced its latest innovation expanding its product offerings of non-fluorinated DWR products with the introduction of Zelan R2SM. Zelan R2SM is focused on lower to mid performance needs in the market and it is also a renewably sourced finish.

Work is underway in the development of other non-fluorinated offerings to provide additional stain release benefits. These renewably sourced finishes help brands in minimizing the environmental impact of the textile supply chain, said the company.

Zelan R2SM complements Zelan R3, the chemistry for Teflon EcoElite, the first renewably sourced finish that provides high durable water repellent (DWR) performance and is up to three times more durable than existing non-fluorinated repellents. Zelan R3 is bluesign approved and is an approved input finishing chemical for GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified textile products. Teflon EcoElite contains 60 percent renewably sourced, plant-based raw materials. It is not derived from food-sources and is non-genetically modified.

Zelan R3 is commercially run at over 130 mills in 22 countries and today over one million consumer articles feature and promote the Teflon EcoElite brand. The Teflon EcoElite brand can be found on consumer products ranging from high-end ski wear to every day outerwear.

“We are thrilled with how Chemours has elevated the water repellency performance of outdoor fabrics and provided more protection of the environment at the same time with their Teflon EcoElite finish,” said Giulio Colombo, CEO, Colmar. Developments are underway to introduce Teflon EcoElite finish on furniture, table linens and children’s school uniforms.

A German brand has confirmed their fabric treated with Teflon EcoElite can meet the OEKO-TEX 100 standard. Each fabric must have their own testing and controls to ensure that the finished textile articles conform to the requirements of the specified standards.

Chemours is also expanding its short-chain products for Teflon fabric protector to meet the needs of customers that value repelling oil stains and delivering the ultimate finish in stain protection. The broad Teflon fabric protector portfolio provides high-quality solutions that are also sustainable, performance-driven, fluorine-efficient and based on short-chain chemistry.
