Outdoor adventure and action gear specialty retailer Summit Sports announced the launch of OWN IT, an initiative to minimize landfill waste, protect natural resources and assist in wildlife conservation while inspiring others to do the same.
Summit Sports and its family of brands, including Skis.com and ACK.com, have been outfitting outdoor enthusiasts for decades while adhering to enviro-centric ideology to reduce landfill waste, said the company. Many of the programs have already proven successful, including an investment in machinery designed to recycle excess cardboard and other efforts including reusing shipping boxes and packing materials. Now, Summit Sports is pledging to implement additional efforts to achieve the goal of being a zero landfill company over the next several years.
“Our mission has always been to inspire customers to enjoy the Great Outdoors, but with that comes a collective responsibility in making sure we protect and preserve it,” said Ray Luckado, VP of Operations. “We’ve been taking steps to minimize the footprint we leave behind and we are now owning up to it by making a pledge to do more for the planet, for our wildlife and for future generations to enjoy.”
The program is initially being launched as an internal effort but according to Roland Jimenez, Director of Brand Marketing, the long-term goal is to grow it into a large-scale campaign to raise awareness beyond the walls of the organization
“What we are doing as a company is vital but just as important is what we do as stewards of the environment while individually participating in outdoor activities,” said Roland. “Expect to see a series of campaigns to help promote the concept of “OWN IT” and how it applies to each and every one of us.”
