SGS Approved to Test, Certify eBikes & eMobility Devices

SGS, a testing, inspection and certification company, has become a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) to be accredited by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to test against standards introduced for personal eMobility Devices and eBikes.

SGS says it is the only NRTL accredited to test and certify against two standards admitted to applicable standard scope under the NRTL program:

  • ANSI/CAN/UL 2272 – Standard for Electrical Systems for Personal eMobility Devices
  • ANSI/CAN/UL 2849 – Standard for Electrical Systems for eBikes

UL 2272 is applicable to a variety of motor-driven personal mobility devices, such as self-balancing scooters, electric-powered scooters, e-skateboards and eBikes (without functioning pedals). It covers a range of rechargeable battery systems – lithium-ion and lead batteries and supercapacitors.

UL 2849 covers two or three-wheel eBikes, powered by lithium-ion batteries, which have functional pedals. These can be electrically power assisted cycles (EPAC) or non-EPAC, and they typically have a top speed of 45km/h.

SGS Global Head of NRTL John Ciliege said, “The speed of development of lithium-ion battery and motor technology has led to a huge boost in popularity for electric powered scooters and eBikes. A lack of valid standards initially resulted in frequent fire accidents. We, therefore, welcome OSHA’s decision to adopt UL 2272 and UL 2849 as mandatory standards for products destined for U.S. markets. SGS is proud to lead the way as the only NRTL currently accredited to test and certify against these standards.”

The market for power-assisted mobility devices is growing fast in North America. With OSHA’s decision to make these standards mandatory, manufacturers are required to get their products tested and certified by an accredited NRTL.

SGS offers comprehensive testing and certification services for manufacturers and retailers of personal eMobility devices and eBikes. They provide a one-stop solution that can incorporate restricted substance testing, compliance testing against a wide variety of international and domestic standards, battery cell evaluations and mechanical performance testing. In addition, their experts can support manufacturers in the development and delivery of high-quality, safe and performant products to markets around the world.
