Kathmandu, the iconic New Zealand travel and adventure brand, will launch in North America with a collection debut at Outdoor Retailer Winter Market (Nov. 7-10 in Denver).
Founded in 1987, Kathmandu has grown from humble beginnings in Christchurch, New Zealand to an internationally recognized leader in innovative and sustainable gear. Product design, engineering and testing are all based in New Zealand, the mecca of adventure travel. Their award-winning apparel and equipment designs are the embodiment of New Zealand’s outdoor spirit, and their dedication to sustainability and social impact is recognized worldwide as the gold standard.
In the United States, Kathmandu is committed to a wholesale strategy, supporting the needs and sales aspirations of specialty outdoor retailers with an exceptional product collection.
“We’re excited to launch in North America and bring an iconic Kiwi brand to the market. Nobody travels further than New Zealanders. Exploration and adventure is in our DNA. Kathmandu gear gives outdoor enthusiasts and travelers the confidence to go anywhere,” said Bill Chandler, Kathmandu North American Vice President of Sales and Marketing.
Kathmandu’s product line is led by travel-ready apparel, insulated jackets, merino, rainwear, backpacks and travel gear. In 2018, Kathmandu won ISPO Gold awards for its Lawrence ThermoPlume Jacket, a hooded insulated jacket that packs down into a neck pouch and transforms into a travel pillow.
At Outdoor Retailer, Kathmandu will also be introducing a full range of men’s and women’s outerwear, layering pieces, functional casual wear, packs, bags and accessories. Highlights in the collection include the Stockton Rain Coat and Connect Smart Pack.
The Stockton showcases Kathmandu’s commitment to style and sustainability with its sleek and streamlined style paired with recycled face fabric, recycled polyester insulation and a recycled inner lining.
The Connect Smart Pack keeps travelers charged and connected for days on end. The 28L backpack features a fully integrated Joey smart unit that charges and connects wireless to smartphones via the Joey app for an unhindered mix of portable power and wearable technology.
“With Kiwi ingenuity, and an open mind, we continuously adapt our gear to endure different weather conditions, diverse terrains, and the ever-changing needs of adventurers,” added Chandler.
Kathmandu’s sustainability highlights are detailed in their annual report, including;
- First Southern Hemisphere brand to achieve Fair Labor Association certification
- World no. 2 ranking by the Textile Exchange for preferred materials
- 100% responsible down across the range
- “A” grade in the Baptist World Aid Ethical Fashion Report
- Recycled 6.7 million bottles into gear with Repreve technology
“We’ve been dedicated to sustainable business practices and positive social impact for more than 30 years. We act with people and the planet in mind – from the creative minds of our designers, to the careful hands of our suppliers, to the backs of our customers all around the world,” added Chandler.
