Geartrade, Sunday Afternoons Receive Climate Neutral Certification

Geartrade, the outdoor marketplace for “UnNew” gear, and Sunday Afternoons, a technical headwear band, have announced they have received 2022 Climate Neutral Certification

This is the second straight year that Geartrade has achieved the certification. It was completed after measuring its 2021 greenhouse gas emissions, purchasing carbon credits to offset that footprint and detailing plans to reduce emissions more.

The certification was achieved after a year of significant growth for the company, which included the reselling of 45,590 pieces of outdoor gear in 2021, and a 38 percent increase in resale volume through the first two quarters of 2022.

“These are small but important steps in the right direction for Geartrade, as well as all the other companies who have prioritized a climate-neutral business model. That said, we are fully aware that there’s still a lot of work to be done in terms of lowering the overall carbon footprint of our business, our community and our industry,” said Aaron Provine, president of Geartrade.

Sunday Afternoons CEO Sarah Sameh added, “At the core of Sunday Afternoons is a love of nature and wild places. Climate Neutral Certification supports the brand’s heartfelt commitment to decrease our footprint across our business. Through our carbon offset program, we have purchased credits in the Hong Phong 4 Solar Plant in Vietnam to offset 4,905 tons (metric tons) of greenhouse gas emissions this year. Our goal is to reduce our entire carbon footprint by 30 percent by 2030.”

Sunday Afternoons, based in Ashland, Oregon, distributes its products in 60 countries.

Climate Neutral works to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions and bring climate neutrality to hundreds of brands and millions of consumers each year. Companies that achieve their certification must meet internationally recognized standards for carbon measurement and neutrality, and certification must be renewed annually.

The Climate Neutral organization is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that works with brands and consumers to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions. The Climate Neutral Certified label is an independent standard for climate neutrality that is earned by brands that measure, offset, and reduce the emissions from making and delivering products and services to customers.

“Climate Neutral Certified companies show the world that immediate action on climate change is possible and essential,” said Austin Whitman, CEO of Climate Neutral. “In just three years, a growing number of Climate Neutral Certified brands have built a powerful movement that gives companies and consumers meaningful ways to act on climate.
