As another example of the transformation taking place within physical retail, on October 15, Life Time Athletic Oklahoma City opens its doors at Quail Springs Mall, taking the 236,000-square-foot space once occupied by Macy’s. It’s the first of many Life Time athletic lifestyle resorts coming to regional shopping centers across the country, said the company.
While not exactly an “outdoor” story, the opening exemplifies a trend toward physical retail becoming a destination for active lifestyle participates seeking health and wellness. For outdoor and sporting goods retailers located in and near shopping centers, the concept of a fitness center, climbing gym or other entertainment-based facility serving as an anchor tenant creates the potential to supplant department store foot traffic with a more active, younger and health conscious shoppers.

The 236,000-square-foot Life Time footprint features:
- a 177,000-square-foot, two-story building with eight tennis courts, two basketball courts, two large group training studios, one studio cycle theater, three yoga studios, one Pilates studio, Kids Academy, LifeCafe, LifeSpa, more than 400 pieces of cardio, resistance and free weight equipment, a function training floor and indoor aquatic center with leisure and lap pools as well as whirlpools and saunas, luxurious dressing rooms that feature complimentary towel and locker service, Wi-Fi, J.R. Watkins toiletries, and sauna and steam rooms,
- a 33,000-square-foot outdoor pool deck with leisure and lap pools, whirlpools and bistro,
- and a 26,000-square-foot tennis complex with four tennis courts and viewing area.
Life Time Athletic Oklahoma City is the 139th Life Time destination in North America and the second in Oklahoma.
