Inside Outdoor Spring Issue Premieres AR Technology

Inside Outdoor magazine has taken the leading edge when it comes to digital enhancement of printed publications. The Spring issue of IO introduces the outdoor industry to Layar, an augmented reality (AR) application that allows for a digitally enhanced view of the traditional printed page.

Layar AR adds layers of digital information – including videos, photos and sounds – directly on top of IO’s cover and ultimately any page inside the issue, including any advertisement. Readers armed with just the camera and sensors in a smartphone or tablet simply need to download the free Layar app and then scan the cover of the magazine – either the printed or online version – with their mobile device’s built-in camera.

“The information, education and messaging available through the pages of Inside Outdoor magazine no longer is constrained by the dimensions of the printed page,” said Berge Kaprelian, publisher of Inside Outdoor. “Our editors and advertisers now have the unlimited capability of the digital world to develop and share their messages.”

According to Layar, on average, the click-through rate (CTR) for Layar customers is 87 percent, which means that for users that scanned a page with Layar, almost 9 out of 10 interacted with the digital content presented on that page.
