City Paddle SUP Festival Coming to New York

City Paddle Festival, a standup paddleboard festival coming to the heart of New York City, will kick off an week of paddle sports events on Saturday September 15 at North Cove Marina in Battery Park, below the Freedom Tower. City Paddle Festival marks the beginning of the New York SUP Open, The Association of Paddlesurf Professionals’ (APP’s) second stop on the World Championship Tour.

Outlined below are the key components of the 2018 New York SUP Open that are open to the public, together with relevant registration links and helpful information regarding each event.

Paddle Around Statue of Liberty: The Iconic New York City Race
The Paddle Around the Statue of Liberty promises to be one of the most iconic races in recent times, featuring the majestic backdrop of the Manhattan Skyline, Ellis Island and Lady Liberty herself, said show organizers. The event is a 10km distance race that leaves from North Cove Marina, in the shadow of the Freedom Tower, heading across to Ellis Island, under the Ellis Island footbridge, around Liberty Island and back home to North Cove Marina, where participants can enjoy a full day of activity and fun at the APP venue on land.

There will be a demo pool, stage, music, large screens and all day activations on site and at the water’s edge.

The APP is offering board transport from Long Beach to the venue and back, as well as transport for the Pro Fleet on the morning of the race and back that evening. For full logistic and transport info, please see the competitor packs included below:

APP World Tour Sprint Racing: Pro & Pro-Am divisions
As a culmination to stop #2 of the 2018 APP World Tour for racing, Long Beach will host a dramatic Sprint Racing elimination through the surf, right at the heart of the City of Long Beach at Hurley Surf Club, powered by Skudinsurf (1 Riverside Blvd, Long Beach).

This Sprint Racing elimination will take place on Tuesday afternoon, the September 18, at the APP World Tour venue right in front of Hurley Surf Club. For all course details and general information, please go to www.appworldtour.com.

Long Beach will also host a special Red Carpet Opening event on Monday September 17, as well as the podium for both sprint results and the Overall Racing Event Awards for the 2018 New York SUP Open. All entrants will receive an official invitation to all events, with registration for the Racing component of the New York SUP Open available HERE.

Surfing to take center stage in Long Beach from September 18th – 23rd for Stop #1 of the 2018 APP World Surfing Tour
The 2018 Surfing Season will kick off in dramatic fashion at the New York SUP Open in Long Beach, as the world’s best will step up to do battle in the East Coast’s premium venue, just a stone’s throw from New York City.

The event will consist of an Open Trials event to provide competition and fun for all participants, but also a chance to qualify for the prestigious Main Event at Stop #1 of the 2018 APP World Tour. The Top 4 from the Trials Event will qualify for the Main Event.
The Main Event will consist of the Top 24 Men and Top 10 Women in the World based on the 2017 World Tour Rankings, with an additional 8 Men Wildcards and 4 Women Wildcards being awarded to stand out competitors from across the globe.

Fun, 5.5m Downwind Community Paddle benefitting Surf For All Charity to take place on Saturday September 22nd in Long Beach
To cap an epic week of action and further engage in the local community in Long Beach, a special 5.5 mile downwind paddle, from the tip of Long Beach back down to the APP World Tour venue in Long Beach, will be held on September 22nd. The spirit of this event is fun and to raise money and awareness for the work that SURF FOR ALL do to make surfing and the water accessible to everyone. It is a chance for Pro Athletes to paddle with the community and have fun in a race that is for the people, capped off with a celebratory party at Ted’s Fishing Station for final weekend of the New York SUP Open.

New York SUP Open to be broadcast LIVE throughout, from the Statue of Liberty Paddle to the Long Beach Surf & Race events
The entire New York SUP Open will be broadcast live at www.appworldtour.com and simulcast on the @appworldtour facebook page, with a full broadcast production providing complete coverage of the action, replays and more. This will be in place for the Statue of Liberty Paddle, the Long Beach Surf Racing and Surf Competition, with action-packed commentary from the APP Team.

All the action will then form part of two shows for global TV broadcast (CBS Sports, Fox Sports Australia, Fox Sports Asia and other global distribution channels), with one focused on the surfing event at Long Beach and one on the racing action from New York City and Long Beach.
