Throughout the week

of OR, OIA will be host-

ing daily lunch sessions

focused on the themes

of policy, participa-

tion and sustainability.

And the show will kick

off with the Industry

Breakfast, featuring

keynote speaker Joel

Makower, himself a

sustainability thought

leader. And on Night 0

of the show, the industry

will celebrate one of its

greatest collaborative

efforts, the Sustainability

Working Group (SWG),

which formed 10 years

ago and includes 300

brands, retailers, suppli-

ers and other stakehold-

er organizations working

to identify and imple-

ment better business

practices throughout

their supply chains.

“It’s important for the

longevity of our brands

but also for the longevity

of the world we live in,”

says Smartwool’s Jenni-

fer McClaren of her com-

pany’s involvement with

the SWG and its commit-

ment to sustainability.

In the OIA campaign,

McClaren is paired with

Dave Petri, vice presi-

dent of marketing for

Farm to Feet, which com-

petes with Smartwool in

the sock category but col-

laborates through the SWG. In a video

on

outdoorindustry.org

, Petri explains:

“What you guys (Smartwool) do to im-

prove your supply chain ultimately helps

improve the supply chain for

others and vice versa.”

Columbia’s Haney echoes

McClaren and Petri, “It’s

one thing to say you’re do-

ing good things in sustain-

ability. It’s another thing

to assess that and bench-

mark it. We’ve been using

the [Higg Index] to not

only benchmark our own

progress but also to drive

business and some of our

[corporate] projects. It helps

us objectively assess our

sustainability initiatives.”

A product of the precom-

petitive, collaborative SWG

group, the Higg Index is the

epitome of what cross-col-

laboration can accomplish.

Roberts, herself, seeks op-

portunities for OIA to collabo-

rate on things it can’t do alone.

“Grassroots Outdoor Alliance

is better positioned to lead spe-

cialty retail education than OIA,”

she says, “but we need to sup-

port that with our resources to

make sure that as many retailers

as possible can access it. This

campaign is about recognizing

where we can lead and where

we can enable other groups in

the industry to lead.”

Outdoor Industry As-

sociation’s programming at

the winter show will revolve

around the Together We

Are A Force messaging, and

Roberts hopes attendees will

carry the message with them

into the future by collaborating

on advocacy work, sustainability initia-

tives and participation efforts.
