InsideOutdoor | SPRING/SUMMER 2024 4 Easier Being Green The latest in eco-friendly ingredients In addition to the innovative new outdoor products that hit the market every spring/summer, component suppliers are making the world a better place with breakthroughs in sustainable and eco-friendly textiles and materials. Here’s a sample of the latest developments from the supply chain’s leading material scientists, engineers and designers. Intracom Showcases Several Technologies Specialty chemicals provider Archroma has introduced a new biobased durable water repellent (DWR) designed to provide robust rain and stain protection on all kinds of fibers while achieving a very soft handle and avoiding undesired effects such as yellowing and chalk marking. PHOBOTEX NTR-50 LIQ performs especially well on synthetic fibers and their blends, making it ideal for outdoor apparel and outerwear, said the company. The new DWR is based on 50% renewable carbon content and is free of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and formaldehyde. It is also crosslinker-free, which means while offering good wash durability on its own, it can be combined with a crosslinker like ARKOPHOB NTR40, which has a biocarbon content of 40%, to further boost wash and/or dry-cleaning resistance. PHOBOTEX NTR-50 LIQ also has excellent runnability, said Archroma, which ensures reproducible performance and high production safety, even at elevated temperatures. This is helpful for mills seeking to solve challenges including running issues, such as roller build-up and strong chalk marking or harsh handle. Thermore Offers Sustainable Stretch Insulation The Thermore Group recently announced the debut of its most dynamic stretch insulation in its five decades of innovation. Made from 50% post-consumer recycled polyester, Freedom offers ground-breaking stretch in four levels of warmth, ranging from 60 to 150 grams per square meter, for a multitude of uses. Dynamometer testing shows that Freedom insulation has incredible elasticity and recovers to 100% of its pre-stretch size time after time, said Thermore. It is bluesign and Global Recycled Standard certified. It’s machine washable, can be dry cleaned, is easy-care for the consumer and design friendly for product developers with its high resistance to fiber migration. At the recent Functional Fabric Fair in Portland, Ore., Sympatex showed three new products – a plain weave, a dobby and a twill – all sourced from e.dye, a solution-dyed polyester color system with more than 5,000 colors and a sophisticated color-matching process for garment textiles. “Because e.dye actually puts the color inside the yarn, adding the new products to our portfolio gives us three major advantages: saving water, producing less CO2, using less chemicals,” said Anja Palic, product manager for Sympatex. “Moreover, since the pigment becomes an inherent component of the yarn (in contrast to traditional processes where the yarn is produced and then colored), solution dyeing yields fibers with exceptional color fastness.” These fibers resist bleeding or fading even with prolonged use or exposure to sunlight, Palic continued. “Since there is no dyeing process, which has many different influencing factors on color accuracy, reproducibility is guaranteed with dope dyed goods when reordering.” Sympatex Showcases Doped Dye Innovations
5 InsideOutdoor | SPRING/SUMMER 2024 Green Theme Technologies, suppliers of the EMPEL waterfree and PFAS-free textile finishing platform, continues a trajectory of growth by partnering with Koreanbased textile company Hwasung International. Hwasung is the first Korean mill to offer the EMPEL high performance technology to global footwear brands and regional Korean mill customers. Known globally for providing high performance textiles that incorporate functional yarns such as Dyneema, Kevlar and Cordura, Hwasung will now broaden its high performance and sustainable offerings by scaling EMPEL into its global supply chain. Green Theme’s EMPEL platform can be applied to a wide range of synthetic knit, woven, non-woven and novel fabrics that are traditionally hard to treat, said GTT. Because no water is used during the treatment application, EMPEL can remove pollution and waste from most textile manufacturing processes. EMPEL Water-free, PFAS-free Finishing Expands into Korea NILIT Goes Circular with Nylon 6,6 NILIT, producers of high-quality Nylon 6.6 for apparel and owner of the SENSIL brand, introduced SENSIL Flow, a new approach to Nylon 6.6 circularity that enables yarn, fabric and, ultimately, apparel recycling, said the company. SENSIL Flow is described as an “innovative approach that engages the entire supply chain to truly attain circularity through product design and partnership.” Today, apparel recycling is constrained by the complexity of sorting and separating materials before they can be recycled back to their original components. Garments made with blended fibers and fabrics are especially difficult to recycle. The SENSIL Flow approach addresses these obstacles on multiple fronts, explained NILIT executives. First, SENSIL Flow is a yarn that delivers a mono-component fabric with comfort stretch that can be considered as an alternative to elastane in certain end uses. Engineered to provide inherent elasticity and recovery properties, SENSIL Flow creates comfortable, stretchable performance fabrics for the casual and lifestyle segments. These fabrics have excellent color absorption and 3D effects while at the same time making post-consumer recycling possible. Pure premium Nylon 6.6 yarns, fabrics and garments are easily recycled using a process that requires no additional chemicals and generates minimal CO2 emissions. Additionally, NILIT partners with recycling experts to facilitate the efficient recovery and recycling of fabric waste and post-consumer fabrics and clothing that would otherwise end up in a landfill or incinerator. These partners are expected to create highquality recycled nylon chips that can be reintroduced into NILIT’s nylon fiber spinning process, resulting in high-quality outputs, as well as other engineering plastics. Certificates will validate circularity and provide transparency and accountability for partners committed to building a circular textile economy. Ortholite, Cirql Develop Circular Midsole YKK Adopts Low-Carbon Aluminum Performance insole brand OrthoLite and its sustainable footwear materials subsidiary Cirql recently unveiled a patented midsole foam made with 30-percent postconsumer recycled TPU material and manufactured through a chemical-free, supercritical foaming process. Cirql’s rTPU30 incorporates Global Recycled Standard-certified, post-consumer recycled TPU materials directly into the foam using a patented technique exclusive to Cirql’s chemical-free supercritical injection foaming process. “Our goal is to exceed the expectations of footwear developers searching for advanced, sustainable footwear materials designed with consideration for their end-of-life,” said Glenn Barrett, founder and CEO of OrthoLite. The Cirql rTPU30 material has been tested by third-party labs and passes the essential tests for midsole specs, said the company. It will be offered with the option of a co-molded TPU outsole which will remove the current bonding process and make it a glueless, single material bottom unit. Alternatively, Cirql’s midsole foam innovations also can be conventionally bonded to all outsoles on the market today. YKK Corporation reportedly will begin purchasing alloy wires that utilize low-carbon aluminum, with the aim of making a staged transition from conventional aluminum alloy zippers to eco-friendly zippers that use low-carbon aluminum. The move was part of YKK’s Sustainability Vision 2050, its sustainability goals for achieving climate neutrality by 2050, which set targets under the five themes of climate change, material resources, water resources, chemical management and respect people. YKK said it will continue to work with customers and suppliers to reduce GHG emissions through the development and expansion of eco-friendly products and technologies and accelerate its efforts to bring about a sustainable society.
InsideOutdoor | SPRING/SUMMER 2024 6 Think of Osprey Packs in Cortez, Colo., or Crazy Creek of Red Lodge, Mont. There’s also Wenonah Canoe in Winonah, Minn. Or how about Brunton of Riverton, Wyo., or Farm to Feet in Spartan, Tenn. These are just a few of the influential legacy outdoor brands that were founded or headquartered in small, rural towns and cities across America. Other rural locations including Arcata, Calif.; Logan, Utah; Steamboat Springs, Colo.; and Easley, S.C., also have long been literal outdoor mini-Mechas, hosting multiple outdoor brands and vibrant outdoor industry communities. Looking to make sure this tradition carries on, a group of likeminded brands officially came together this spring to help make sure the outdoor industry’s rural roots continue to have room to grow. Dreamed up by Robin Hall, founder of Town Hall Outdoor; Kelly Mazanti, cofounder of Buttnski; and TJ Smith, cofounder of Stray Wild, Rural is Rad was formed through a shared objective to build awareness for rural outdoor brands and their entrepreneurs who experience shared challenges working in remote places with limited resources. The movement looks to introduce consumers and specialty retailers to new brands and empower consumers to shop locally while fostering awareness for the amazing products, jobs and communities that are being developed in more remote places. Ultimately, the movement hopes to draw in consumers who are mindful about what they are purchasing and seek to connect with brands that are centered around purpose and values – those that are likely to care for the outdoors and treat it with respect. While the RIR is currently Colorado-based, the movement has a vision for the community to become a formula that rural brands nationwide can replicate in the years to come. “We believe that rural communities are not only the heart of the outdoor experience but also the engine driving connections and sustainability in our industry,” said Mazanti. “Through our movement, we aim to shine a bright light on hard-working and passionate rural businesses, create deep bonds between brands and build a loyal following with consumers.” As part of its commitment, Rural is Rad will host a series of events, workshops and networking opportunities designed to empower rural entrepreneurs, connect industry leaders and inspire the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts. The movement also has launched an online platform, serving as a hub for rural-based brands to showcase their products, share stories and connect with a global audience. Moving forward, goals are to build a comprehensive directory, marketplace and community of outdoor-oriented brands for folks to discover and support, while also providing a resource for rural founders to collaborate and, potentially, build something bigger. “This movement will start right here in Colorado and expand nationwide in future years, with the help of key partners,” said Hall. “As founders in rural communities in Colorado, we know how important it is to collaborate and support each other due to working with more constraints and limited resources that are available in urban environments,” said Smith. “We are excited to help retailers and consumers find and fall in love with passionate, hard-working companies that provide great gear and services.” All rural outdoor brands are encouraged, at no cost, to join the Rural is Rad movement.
