Since the beginning of the year through April, foot traffic to small brick-and- mortar businesses increased by 38% com- pared to the 20% increase among enter- prise-level brick and mortar organizations. “This is a huge win and very encouraging for small business owners of retailers and restaurants,” said Megan Wintersteen, vice president of marketing at Zenreach. “With the economy still having a long way to go to recover, it’s promising to see small busi- nesses resonating with consumers more than larger restaurants and retailers.” Camping Continues to Crush It It’s estimated that more than 10 million households camped for the first time in 2020, and 2021 may end up being a bigger year for camping. Measuring demand by the number of consumers shopping on Amazon at a given time, researchers at Pattern Data Science found that demand for camping gear heading into March 2021 was higher than seen in both 2020 and 2019. Click-and-Collect Goliaths Seven major click-and-collect multichannel retailers accounted for 64% of red-hot click-and-collect sales in the U.S. in 2020, according to counts compiled by eMarketer. Together, these companies reaped more than $46 billion in click-and-collect sales. It should be noted, however, that not all of the brands on this list are considered “major ecom- merce players,” nor are in the top 10 for general retail sales. Still, these seven companies provide the models for capitaliz- ing on the spike in interest in click-and-collect. Analysts at eMarketer expect click-and-collects sales to maintain double- digit growth through 2024.
