Summer 2019 – Inside Outdoor Magazine

Inside Outdoor | SUMMER 2019 36 Product Market Showcase | WINTER 2019/2020 Tech Savvy “The future is here.” We all probably should get used to hearing that. And although it’s often more marketing than meat, this is pretty cool. At last year’s TechCrunch Disrupt event, apparel startup Seismic unveiled a collection of “Powered Clothing.” No, this is not more compression garments that “increase blood flow.” According to Seismic, “Powered Clothing fuses discreet robotics with textiles to create products that look and feel like apparel, but function more like an extension of the human body – an extra set of mus- cles people can put on every day.” Seismic suits support the body’s core by providing up to 30 watts of power to each hip and the lower back to support sitting, standing, lifting, car- rying and a range of other activities. The company plans to enter the con- sumer market this summer with plans to focus on the activewear market. “We see a future where simply getting dressed in the morning can dramatically improve people’s life- styles and expand what they are capable of accomplishing,” said CEO and co-founder Rich Mahoney. Fol- lowing the release of the prototypes, “our technology will continue to be- come lighter and smaller and more powerful, with the suit’s intelligence uniquely optimizing the wearer’s ex- perience, learning and adapting with every use,” he continued. Seismic’s Powered Clothing consists of three distinct layers: base layer, strength layer and intelligent layer.
