ëClean Fabric Care With its reliance on down and wool, the outdoor apparel industry has struggled to find an eco-responsible solution for recommended apparel care. Despite the toxic chemicals, wasteful water use and associated pollution of dry cleaning, it is still commonly used and recommended by manufactur- ers, retailers and rental services. Now there is a reliable, solvent-free, water-free eco-responsible laundry alterna- tive for outdoor gear and apparel. By employing cleaning technology that doesn’t damage, shrink, fade or use heat in the drying process, ëClean Advanced Fabricare is revolution- izing the cleaning and repair of outdoor apparel and gear. The technology combines liquid carbon dioxide (LCO2) with a 100 percent no heat dry cycle, penetrating deep into Picture Organic Apparel Since Picture started in 2008, all of its technical outerwear has been made with a minimum of 50 percent recycled PET to help reduce its carbon footprint. Even though recycled is better than raw, this still relies on a petroleum-based product – plastic bot- tles. So, in the quest to eliminate its dependence on fossil fuels, a leading contributor to climate change, Picture sees bio-based materials as the future. New for F/W20, Picture’s Expedition line, its most technical outerwear for skiing and riding, will be made with a bio-sourced polyester derived from sugarcane waste. When used with Picture’s various eco-friendly membranes, this collection of jackets will be some of the most sustainable, techni- cal outerwear on the market. Meier Custom Skis Founded in 2009, Meier Skis are handcrafted in Colo- rado and are the only 100 percent produced ski product made from tree to ski within the state. Meier’s eco- friendly and high-performance skis and snowboards get their unique character from their aspen and beetle kill pine wood cores. Meier harvests the trees from the western slope of Colorado with responsible silvicultural techniques to help mitigate wildfire risk and give trees killed in the beetle kill pine epidemic a second life. Meier approached the ski industry with the goal of transforming the old business model, combining eco- friendly manufacturing with an immersive and experien- tial brand experience. Ted Eynon, owner and founder at Meier explained, “There has been a growing trend among large ski brands to cut costs and increase volume and competitive pricing, and with that some noticeable short cuts have been taken in material and lower-quality top sheets. We make skis to last.” Instead of traditional epoxy, the non-toxic Super Sap used is derived from pine resin and recycled vegetable oil for greener manufacturing. Meier’s headquarters, mean- while, are located on South Broadway in Denver, where the company welcomes guests into its “Craft Skiery” to enjoy a beer and watch skis being handcrafted. fabric to remove dirt and stains. This process com- pletely eliminates water and harmful chemicals from the cleaning process, while all the company’s clean- ing liquid is recycled and reused in a patented closed loop system, making it more sustainable than a traditional wash cycle. ëClean operates out of a 13,000 square foot cleaning and fulfill- ment center in Dallas, Texas, a facility in which the company also provides repair, storage and logistics for virtual closets and re-commerce providers – thereby reducing heavy capital and operational expenditures that companies would otherwise have to spend on infrastructure and management for such initiatives.
