Unlike pepper spray, pepper gel is dispensed as a thick, sticky substance that will stick to an attacker’s skin, making it much more difficult to wipe off. It does not atomize into fine droplets like tradi- tional sprays. Because it is thicker than liquid pepper sprays, pepper gel nearly eliminates all potential blow back and cross contamination, mak- ing it a good choice for defending yourself outside or in close quarters. One important consideration in se- lecting a pepper-based product is mak- ing sure that it is consistent and reliable in delivering the heat. A University of Utah study of pepper spray products, for instance, found a 30 percent heat failure rate. SABRE uses its exclusive HPLC (high performance liquid chroma- tography technology) laboratory to test every batch of product in its in-house lab, which eliminates the failure rate experienced by other brands, guaran- teeing maximum strength in every can. Retailers also should be familiar with the variety of specialized pepper spray products available, what to look for in a pepper spray and the best products for specific situations. Pepper sprays and gels for run- ners put the product right into the palm of the hand using a Velcro strap to ensure there is protection on the go. This is a great product for anyone looking to run between dusk to dawn to feel safer and more empowered. Bear sprays, such as the line from Frontiersman, are a must have for hikers, campers and hunters who ven- ture into the wild, and even for those who simply choose to live near wild land. When it comes to bears, a pep- per-based spray has been proven to be more effective than a gun in stop- ping an attacking animal in its tracks. Bear spray is effective in 98 percent of human/bear interactions compared to 84 percent for handguns and 76 percent for long guns. These products have a higher major capsaicinoid concentration (a maximum of 1.33 percent for pepper spray vs 2 percent for bear spray). And safety doesn’t have to stop when you are on runs or exploring nature. Personal safety products for the car, such as the 3-In-1 Safe Es- cape Automotive Tool, combines a pepper spray with a seatbelt cutter and window glass breaker making it a versatile safety device ideal for camp- ers and families on the road. The future of pepper spray and personal safety continues to evolve, and companies such as SABRE are committed to being on the forefront of product innovation to help keep your customers safe so they can pursue what they love and enjoy the great out- doors with safety and confidence. m David Nance is CEO of SABRE- Security Equipment Corporation
