Inside Outdoor | FALL 2019 10 DATA POINTS Climbing’s Spending Rise Increasing popularity in gym and rock climbing has led to a drastic increase in spending on climb- ing gear, show figures from NDP Group. The total amount spent increased from $148 million to $169 million in the 12 months ending in June 2018, indicating a 14.4% rise. However, it is increas- es in unit prices that are driving sales increases. During the last 36-month period, the average change in prices for all categories of climbing gear rose 23.3%. In contrast, the total change in units sold dropped 7.2%. Grooming in the Great Outdoors U.S. sales of camping accessories and equipment have remained stable, up .2 percent for the 12 months ending March 2019, according to The NPD Group. How- ever, sales of camp accessories that bring the comforts of home to the great outdoors have steadily increased, accounting for most of the growth. “What we’re seeing in the market is consumers who have already purchased the basic camping gear such as tents and sleeping bags don’t yet need to replace those products, so they’re en- hancing their equipment to include items that will bring modern conveniences to their camping experiences,” stated NPD’s Dirk Sorenson. Percent growth in sales of fishing-enabled stand-up paddleboards for the year ending June 2019, according to NPD Group figures. Now, fishing SUPs represented only 3% of the $37.5 million SUP market, but the category overall say a 20% decline over the same period.
