Inside Outdoor Magazine - Fall 2018

Inside Outdoor | FALL 2018 43 “eliminates the feeling of wet, saturat- ed fabric against the body,” according to Cotton Inc. This technology “forces the transfer of moisture away from the skin to the outside of fabric where it can evaporate.” “We are seeing a trend to make cot- ton a performance fabric,” said Bering- er, adding that this includes applica- tions with pajamas, shirts and skirts in addition to yoga apparel. Other Trends to Keep an Eye On Clearly waxing and not waning, the yoga sector of the apparel market is going to continue to trend for now in several other directions. With the widespread availability of yoga togs made from technical fibers, look for price points to start coming down. Free Country is a brand relatively new to yoga that promises moisture- wicking and cooling properties combined with a great hand and a price point much lower than the major brands. And look for more of an emphasis on sustainability. Concern about global warming and climate change is a ma- jor driver in the performance sector and yoga lines that focus heavily on manmade fibers such as polyester will need to start looking for materials that have a kinder footprint. Beringer said this could include a focus away from polyester blends and an emphasis on performance cottons and fibers made from biodegradable materials such as lactose. The drive for newer, better, different and functional is coming from consum- ers, said Beringer. So stay tuned and look for the yoga gear and apparel sector of the performance industry to continue growing and evolving for the foreseeable future. m Glenna Musante has earned mul- tiple awards writing about textile sci- ence for both mainstream and indus- try audiences.
